Sheffield AEC No. 731 & illuminated 'last tram week' car

An old photograph taken at the 'Queens Road Works' (the building was demolished in the 1990s) of Sheffield Corporation Tramways (SCT) illuminated tram for 'last tram week', and AEC Regent III No. 571 (registration SWE431) showing '101 - City' destination blinds. The illuminated tram sides have 'Last Tram Week' and 'The End Of An Era' messages on.

A version hand colourised by me is here:-

This illuminated car was originally 'Preston' passenger car No. 271, built in 1907 by the United Electric Car Co. (UEC) seating 22/36 and running on a Mountain & Gibson radial truck. It was renumbered as 349 in 1937, and in 1951 was converted to a stores car.

It was decorated as an illuminated tram at Queens Road Works and used around the system during that last week of operations. After the final tram procession and system closure on 08 Oct 1960 it went to Tinsley Depot for scrapping but got a temporary reprieve when it was purchased by the 'Tramway Museum Society', going from Tinsley to Ward's Yard for transport on to Crich. While at Crich, between 1962-5, it was converted for use as a mobile electrical generator car and numbered 01, it was broken up for spares in Sep 1967 but the truck was reused.

No. 731 was new to Sheffield Corporation Transport in Oct 1954 comprising an AEC Regent III chassis and Weymann body seating 58 (H32/26R). It was withdrawn from service in 1968.
