Leeds tram No. 44 - Kirkstall Rd. in 1951
An old photograph taken on Kirkstall Road (near Haddon Place) of Leeds City Tramways (LCT) 'Chamberlain' class car No. 44 showing '3/4 - Corn Exchange via Corn Exchange!' destination blinds.
The photo reverse is stamped with the photographer (and/or negative owner) name of R. B. Parr and the date 1 Jun 1951.
No. 44 was built by Brush seating 26/46 running on an EMB 4 wheel pivotal type J truck and going into service Mar 1927. In Dec 1929 it suffered an accident and fire which required the reseating of the lower saloon, this was done with a Horsefield type 2+1 seating layout (changing capacity to 22/46), it did not go back into service until Sep 1930. It was retrucked in Mar 1948 with a Peckham type P35 using 27" wheels, and in Jun 1953 had both saloons reupholstered in red rexine.
It last ran in service in Jun 1955 and the following month was burned at Lowfields Road Permanent Way Yard. The parts of the Leeds tramways systems that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closing in Nov 1959.

Any photograph, ephemera, etc I post on Flickr is in my possession, nothing is copied from another location. The original photographer may have taken copies from their original negative and passed them out (sold them?) so there may be other copies out there of your (and my) 'original' transport photo, although occasionally there may be 'holiday snaps' type photos where there are not any other photos exactly the same in existence.
If you wish to use this image (bearing in mind it may not be my copyright) or obtain a full size version (most of my uploads are small size) please contact me.
