Southern Vectis

A Bristol FS-type Lodekka with, of course, an ECW body, in the fleet of Southern Vectis, photographed at Ryde, Isle of Wight, on Monday 15th August 1977.

The purpose of the little vent in the middle of the white band was to drain water from the top deck after the floor had been washed. In Bristol there was a celebrated incident in which a man returning home after a trip to the DIY shop dropped a tin of emulsion paint. The lid flew off and a pool of paint spread across the upper-deck floor, eventually finding its way out through the floor vent and down the side of the bus. The bus had been outshopped after a repaint only days before. Thereafter it was written into regulations that no one be allowed to travel if carrying paint.

When I had finished taking photographs I returned to the mainland on a tiny hovercraft ...an experience of which I recall nothing.
