Modernist house, Bristol.
Fitted with new windows but otherwise relatively unspoiled, this house in Stoke Bishop, Bristol, was designed by A. E. Powell. It was built in 1935 for the Electrical Association for Women, presumably as some sort of showcase for modern electrified living. There is another house of the same design, but considerably altered, in Sneyd Park. For an early view of this one see:

Normally I regard gravel in gardens with a certain froideur, but it looks quite well here. I have noticed that the more thoughtful owners of Modernist houses sometimes try to set them off with trees and shrubs that have a look of southern Europe. The continent has always been the spiritual homeland of the egghead bourgeoisie which favours Modernism. The house seems to pine for the stoney, sirocco-fanned slopes behind Nice.
