Garages of Glory

This ECW-bodied Bristol LH, ordered during its final days by Wigan Corporation, was delivered to its successor, the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive. It was an unlikely vehicle for a PTE fleet, and no less improbable in that of a municipality.

The photograph was taken at GMPTE's Wigan premises ...presumably the former Wigan Corporation bus garage. I have no way of knowing, but I should think that substantial covered sheds like this one, built of glazed brick, are now rare, bus operators having sold off their property and moved to squalid open yards on industrial estates, with "Security" posted at the entrance. I was much too faint-hearted to ask, but a thick-skinned pal of mine walked boldly into the traffic office to "ask permission" to go inside and take photos. This was immediately granted (without our having to play our "we're bus drivers from Bristol" card) in a way which would be unthinkable in today's "health and safety" climate.
