Where old ways persist

I don't mean to keep on about this unedifying subject, but I have been surprised to find so many gentlemen's urinals surviving in South Wales, running counter to developments elsewhere. These unobtrusive brick structures at the edge of the pavement are often sited on steep valley-sides and the great height of the wall at the rear of this over-looked example must have been intended to screen innocent eyes from the terrible scenes within. Though utilitarian, the design is of good quality, often incorporating such refinements (not present here) as round-cornered bricks at the entrances. Tiling inside, but guttering &c. probably vitreous enamel at one time, is now unlovely stainless steel. Church rather than chapel across the street, but the colliery spoil tip on the hilltop, becoming overgrown with young pines, completes this South Wales scene.
