Baxters of Airdrie

Baxters of Airdrie was founded, like so many independent bus operators, just after the First World War. When it somehow passed to the Scottish Bus Group it became part of their Eastern Scottish subsidiary, but maintained a separate identity and livery within that fleet ...a most civilised arrangement. So here was another livery to delight a refugee from the National Bus Company's reign of terror south of the border. It reminds me ...though I know it only from photographs... of the old Midland General livery.

Alas, the weather on Saturday 7th May 1977, did not show the colour-scheme to advantage. The vehicle, a Bristol FLF Lodekka, carries the registration number RHN 948F which, as you know, was issued at Middlesbrough ...for this was one of the buses involved in the Scottish Bus Group - National Bus Company VRT - FLF exchanges of 1973. It had originally belonged to the United Autos company in northeastern England but was exchanged for a newer SBG Bristol VRT. Its new owners have replaced the original standard destination box with one of Scottish Bus Group pattern. This was usually done, but sometimes not. The same applied on the English side.
