A small piece of bus history

I expect when you first saw this photo you thought it was an early Bristol RE, didn't you? But hold on ...what's that badge on the front ...and look at those wheel-nut rings. In fact the vehicle is a Leyland Leopard L1 with an ECW 42-seat dual-doorway body with room for 19 standing passengers. The combination of Leyland chassis and ECW bodywork was a rare one. ECW's products had, for many years, been available only to the Tilling Group companies ...like the Bristol chassis to which they were almost invariably fitted. In 1966 this batch of Leyland Leopards, built for West Hartlepool Corporation, received the first ECW bodies made available to the open market. The vehicle is seen here at Hartlepool on Wednesday 27th June 1979.
