Making Hay

The contemporary Bentosmobile, a Vauxhall Astra, pictured on Friday 2nd November 1990. I think it said "Special Edition" on the back. I've no idea whether it was, or what the difference would have been if so, but I suspect the "specialness" may have consisted in the stick-on stripes (duplicated at the rear) and that they may have been applied by a previous owner. But still, it was one of the more problem-free cars I've owned.

The photograph was taken at Gospel Pass, at the head of the valley of the Afon Honddu. I was having a "me" day. There weren't many of them then, but I'd managed to talk the Missus into looking after our two boys ...toddler and infant... on her own for the day, and set course for Hay-on-Wye. It was my first visit to the fabled Town of Books, but I became a regular and remained one for as long as I lived in Bristol. I returned with the back seat covered in secondhand books, costing a total of about £15. Prices went up a lot, actually and relatively, in the coming years but in those days, for anyone who actually wanted to read, secondhand books were one of those "best-kept secrets". Trendy pubs were buying them by the yard to line the walls of their bars.
