Panguni Uthiran is one of the most important festivals for Hindus in Tamil Nadu. It is the day for the celebration of "celestial weddings", the marriage of Parvati and Lord Shiva, Rama and Sita and Murugan and Deivanai. this festival is dedicated to Lord Murugan (Kartitikeya), son of Shiva, god of war and victory
Hindu devotees from Tamil Nadu walk (pada yatra) to the temples of Lord Muruga. Some bear "Kavadi", a bamboo pole. . Many pierce their bodies with needles, hooks and spikes as an offering to God and a mark of penance for obliging his wishes.
