Great Britain, London, Queen's Guard, Buckingham Palace, sentry from the „1st Battalion Welsh Guards” …follow the sign!!
The Queen's Guard is the name given to contingents of infantry & cavalry soldiers charged with safeguarding the official royal residences in London. Since the reign of “King Charles II” in 1660, these have been in charge guarding the Sovereign Palaces; they are not purely ceremonial & are fully operational soldiers. Until 1959, the sentries at Buckingham Palace were stationed outside the fence, this stopped succeeding an incident involving a female tourist & a “Coldstream Guardsman”, belonging to the oldest regiment in the Regular Army in continuous active service, originating in Coldstream, Scotland in 1650 when General George Monck founded the regiment. Due to the continued harassment of tourists & sightseers, the guardsman kicked the tourist on the ankle as he marched. The tourist made a complaint to the police & despite sympathy; the guard was confined to barracks for ten days, shortly after the sentries were moved inside the fence.
Each foot-guard is on duty at their post for 2 hours, every 10 minutes, a guard will come to attention, slope their arms & march across their post, generally around 20 paces in total. This is usually repeated four-five times before the guard halts, shoulders the arm & returns to standing at ease. Guards are not permitted to stand relaxed whilst at their post.
