France, Alsace, Strasbourg, the city is the official seat of the European Parliament; the buildings are located in the city’s “Quatier Européen”. The European Parliament building with its hemicycle tower is one of the biggest & most noticeable buildings of Strasbourg. One of the principal buildings is the 60 mtr high tower, with it’s by Roman amphitheatres inspired unfinished aspect & symbolically oriented towards Eastern Europe, of which by the time of the completion of the building no country had so far joined the EU.
The hemicycle “Louise Weiss” building, inaugurated in 1999, named after Louise Weiss, 1893-1983, she was a French author & journalist, feminist & European politician with a family background from an Alsatian cosmopolitan family. The Louise Weiss building for plenary sessions is the largest of any European institution, 750 seats, extended to 785 - for MEPs & 680 for visitors, plus 18 other assembly rooms, as well as a total of 1133 parliamentary offices.
The European Parliament & is legally bound to meet there for twelve per year, lasting about four days each meeting. The other work takes place in Brussels & Luxembourg City, but all votes of the European Parliament must take place in Strasbourg, which makes the French city "de facto" co-city of the European Union.
