China, Xian, Shaanxi, the Bell Tower built in 1384 during the early Ming Dynasty, with a total height of 44,6 mtr, is a noble traditional building & marks the geographical centre of the ancient capital. From this important landmark the intersection connecting the tower to the east, south, west & north central leading streets to the four main gates of the city wall of the Ming Dynasty. The 36 mtr high wooden tower stands on a square brick base, which is 35.5 mtr long & 8.6 mtr high, on each side & is the largest, best, preserved of its kind in China.

During the Ming Dynasty, Xi'an was an important military town in Northwest China, a fact that reflected in the size & historic significance. The tower built by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang to dominate the surrounding countryside & provide early warning of attack by aggressors.

A inscription set in the west wall on the second floor, records the relocation of the tower in 1582 it originally stood near the Drum Tower on the central axis of the city & continued to mark the centre of the city since Tang Dynasty & the following the Dynasties. As the city grew, the geographical centre changed therefore in 1582, the tower was moved thousand mtr east of the original site. Except for the base, all parts are original & history making it a truly notable achievement in the architectural history in China.
