Germany, Munich, Glockenspiel, the carillon with 43 bells of the city hall at the Marien Platz, the city hall square. The actual game works is under the spire & is individually playable. The smallest of the bells weighs 10 kg & has a diameter of 18 cm, the largest weighs 1300 kg with 125 cm diameter, total weight of the bells 7000 kg.
The idea to integrate a carillon in the tower of the New Town Hall is dating back to Georg von Hauberrisser. The costs were considerable, the 43 bells struck with 154,000 gold marks to book, to which the Munich furniture & antique dealer Commerce Karl Rosipal 1904 on the occasion of the centenary of his furniture company contributed with a donation of 32,000 marks. This donation had a curious aftermath; the 1924 late Karl Rosipal was of Jewish origin. 1933-34 his family was refunded the donation, the city probably no longer wanted a Jewish involvement in a quintessentially German Glockenspiel at the time. 1908, the carillon was completed, but was only on February 18, 1909 officially put into operation taken, since it was initially unhappy with the sound of the bells. Since then showed up daily at 11 & 12 clock, from March to October also by 5 pm the figures will turn around & the chime will sound. Only a limited operation was possible between 1944 & 1952, as the chimes was not destroyed during the war, but major repairs were necessary.
As part of the repair of the tower facade has expanded 2006-2007 all bells, cleaned & processed. The belfry was given a suspension made of stainless steel, also springs, trains & other important parts were replaced. The total cost of 750,000 euros, applied, primarily through donations of Munich citizenship, the German Foundation for Monument Protection participated with 100,000 euros. The bells were in time for the 850th anniversary of the city of Munich in 2008 again installed & updated sound chosen.
