Germany, Wedel, the “Roland of Wedel” is a well-known local monument, which stands on the smaller section of the marketplace in the old part of town. The first Roland erected here around 1450 was probably a simple wooden statue. The Roland, with 22 karat gold ornaments, standing in Wedel today is believed to have been raised in 1558, made of “Bückeburg Sandstone”. The statue has a height of 4.50 mtr & a width of 1.50 mtr, the base is 2 by 2 mtr & is 2.20 mtr high, a total height of 6,70 mtr. The weight only of the Roland statue is about 8 tons.
According to the legend, the Roland was a knight serving the Emperor Charlemagne, 747-814, knight Roland died probably in 778 during a battle in the Pyrenees. He was very well-regarded by the people & after his death, with the “Chanson de Roland” he became one hero of the legends of the middle ages.
The Roland symbolized justice in the market & it was traditional to hold sales negotiations or settle disputes under his watchful eye. The principal trading area of the ox market was located just before the crossing of the River Elbe. The livestock were sold to buyers arriving from the west, as well as to dealers from Scandinavia & Flanders. Up to 30,000 head of cattle would be traded in a springtime market that lasted several weeks. First mentioned in 1212, Wedel became the mid-15th Century reinforces the importance of the ox trade, still today the market is hold yearly in April for 3 days, together with a fair for “young & old” as a reminder to this part of the city's history.
