6023 at Barry scrapyard in 1963

A quirk of fate saved both No. 6023 and its classmate No. 6024 King Edward I. They had both been sent to Swindon to be cut up. However, in early November 1962, both locos were sold by BR management to T. Ward’s scrapyard at Giants Ferry, Briton Ferry, yet by the time the Kings reached Court Sart yard at Neath it was discovered there was a weight restriction on getting to Ward’s yard and the Kings were too heavy. It was then decided it was simpler to cancel the sale to Ward’s and re-sell them to Woodhams Bros at Barry which was much nearer than returning them to Swindon. They both arrived at Barry scrapyard in December 1962 and the rest is history.
