Eye Contact
Had Jill hold an old doll for some very quick studies at the end of a session. Very spontaneous and unplanned. She seemed unsure of how to hold the doll, and I was equally uncertain about posing it. I've shot dolls numerous times, but never with people. Likewise people, but never with dolls. It seemed awkward at first; holding the doll like an infant. Looking at the doll. It all seemed forced and unnatural. I figured this was done when suddenly Jill pulled the doll up near her chin and looked up at me. Probably the best shot of the entire session and it was utterly organic...no words, no direction, just bam! In fact the doll wasn't even a part of this session. I just happened to include it at the last minute. I often plan out my people shoots in advance, running a mental checklist of poses, lighting, etc. My greatest fear in people shoots is drawing a complete blank with no suggestions for poses. So easy to get flustered and forget things. Happens all the time. But I'm learning to go with the flow and try to spend some time free-styling and just letting the shoot take its own course. The universe is way better at planning than me.
