Cara Cara & Washington Navel Oranges

Fresh from our yard in Olinda, Maui.

* Cara Cara Navel is a pink-ish-fleshed, sub-acid, seedless orange. It was a natural bud sport mutation of a Washington Navel. Discovered in Hacienda Cara Cara, Venezuela in 1976.

* Washington Navel is an orange-fleshed, seedless, easy-peeling orange. It was imported into Washington DC from the Brazilian city of Bahia in 1870, and has since been widely planted.

These were destined for juice. Interestingly, the lycopene derived pink coloring in Cara Cara Navel does not transfer to the juice, which is yellow-orange, just like Washington Navel juice.
