Tomato seed - Appendix

This is a seed found in the lumen of a cecal appendix removed for acute appendicitis. It can be identified primarily by its size and shape and then by the structure of the coat, which is characterized by an eosinophilic, compact inner layer, and a frayed outer layer with a peripheral hairy or pellucid zone. The storage and embryo cells are quite similar to those of other seeds.
