During the 17th century , the Port of Greenock began as a fishing port for the herring trade and grew up throughout the 18th & 19th centuries to become a major British port and a global centre of Shipbuilding and also the departure point for emigrants leaving Britain.

Another big business was the Sugar Trade with over five companies importing sugar cane molasses from the Caribbean , with the most famous company being Tate & Lyle , who continued up until 1997 when the last 'sugar boat' docked at the Ocean Terminal on the 20th June 1997.

Clydeport can date itself back to 1966 when the three port authorities merged (Clyde Navigation Trust - Greenock Harbour Trust & Clyde Lighthouses Trust) to form the Clyde Port Authority and was subsequently 'privatised' in 1992 and soon after it was subject to a management buyout. Clydeport is now part of the much larger Peel Ports PLC and continues to attract many Ocean Liners throughout extended seasons , as well as Container Ships. Major plans are on the drawing board to further extend the port and to attract the Trans-Atlantic trade once again after a very long lull of many years.
