This is a clear plastic cup, with a heavily faceted surface, sitting open end down on the scanner, with a CD-ROM balanced on top of it, shiny side down. The elliptical distortion is an artifact of the scanner; the further from the bed, the more horizontally compressed the image is. The scan has been smoothed to remove dust specks, and had the contrast adaptively increased.
