Butterflies "Puddling"

These butterflies are puddling. The term puddling refers to the process in which butterflies 'sip' from puddles of water on the ground. Many species of butterflies gather on the ground to take in water and nutrients. At the muddy or sandy puddle the butterfly sips water rich in mineral salts and other essential nutrients that have leached from the surrounding soil and rocks. Male butterflies do more puddling than females.
