Sea Witch
Quilt by Christine Alexiou, Canada. Fabric painting, applique, hand sewing, thread painting, beading.
(from artists' statement) In the original tale of The Little Mermaid, the witch is never described physically, and yet, our perception of her has always been that she is ugly. I chose to portray her with physical beauty, while maintaining a hint of her deranged creepiness from the original tale. The broader question is, as a society are we teaching our children to judge character based on physical appearance?
