Finished!

Molly's studio is finished.

It's the first time we've ever paid anyone to do renovations, and it was quite different from doing it ourselves in a number of ways, to wit:

In the first place, it's finished. Things I do myself never seem to get quite finished or at least to feel finished.

Second, it looks much better than when we do renovations ourselves. This lead carpenter was really good, really traditional, really just the best person we could have hoped for. He actually seemed to enjoy working with challenging materials like cracked, banged-up 140-year-old siding and the leaky, 90-year-old soapstone sink.

Third, we had people in the house five or six days a week since August 17. They were really nice people, but still, that's quite a change for someone as reclusive as I am.

Fourth, it's a bright, warm, draft-free room. That's the first one of those we've ever had.

Fifth, there's more satisfaction in doing the work yourself, but that said, there's a great deal of satisfaction in seeing that the work is done, finished, finis, over, kaput.

In other news, Rabbit christened the new room yesterday by peeing from one side to the other. I guess she had to make it her own. Rabbit's a good dog who has her own ideas about how to do things.

We're taking December off and then the same guys are coming back to replace all our rotting leaky windows with new Pellas.
