Stewart Memorial, Hammond, LA.

Francis Gurley Stewart, (1858-1908) Memorial, Hammond, LA. On April13, 1908 Stewart, aged 50, the crossing watchman, saved the life of 6 year old G. Cary Bercaw from being run over from a passing train. Unfortunately, he died due to his injuries. The Stewart family was awarded the Carnegie Hero Fund commission and the townspeople erected this memorial in his honor. He was buried in the cemetery of the historical Grace Memorial Church.
