Chapman Henry Hyams, Sr. was born July 21, 1838 in Charleston, NC and passed on April 19, 1923 in New York, NY. He was a nineteenth and twentieth century stockbroker, art collector and philanthropist. When the New Orleans Museum of Art opened in 1911, Hyams loaned over 20 paintings for the opening, some of which were later donated outright. He had a mausoleum built, designed by the local and well known Favrot & Livaudais architect firm, to house family remains in the opulent Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans, the marble statuary monument to his sisters based on William Wetmore Story's *Angel of Grief, *also widely known as The Weeping Angel. There are many replications and varying versions throughout the world.
