Crystal Clear
After having breakfast at Rothornhütte at 3am we started our ascent through the darkness around a quarter to four. Not much above the hut we got onto the glacier "Rothorngletscher", on which we ascended about 200m of altitude until reaching the "Wasserloch", a chimney that we climbed up with crampons on. It slowly started to dawn as we reached the top of that climb. From there we continued over smaller snow fields and rocks to a larger area of firn and snow that higher up forms the relatively narrow firn arête of Zinalrothorn's south east ridge. This photograph towards Obergabelhorn and Matterhorn was taken at 6am, shortly before entering that firn field.
