Cruising Sunset Boulevard - 1951
For you vintage car and truck enthusiasts out there, How cool is this scene at Sunset Blvd & El Centro Avenue in West Hollywood, California from August of the year 1951.
The fabulous background features the original art deco building of the NBC Radio City Studios and west coast headquarters of the National Broadcasting Company, which was constructed in 1938, and demolished in 1964 after the move to their massive new Burbank complex.
And the Hollywood Palladium, also an art deco design, with a banner showing that the Ray Anthony Orchestra was booked for performances in the main ballroom - The Palladium was built in 1940 on part of the original Paramount Pictures movie lot, later renovated, and is still in use as a venue as of this posting.
Now back to the main subject for me – A clean blue Chevrolet tractor unit of P.M.T. Transport, complete with amber fog lights, hauling a rig filled with four brand new 1951 Chevys.
The yellow/blue car up front looks like a Deluxe Bel Air Hardtop Coupe, which would have been one of 103,356 built that year at a base price of $1914 with the fender skirts and two-tone paint costing extra.
The light gray car behind it was either a Deluxe Styleline Sport Coupe or a Deluxe Styleline 2-Door sedan which looked almost identical externally.
On the lower level of the rack is a new light green pickup and a new dark green truck chassis, all heading to a Los Angeles dealer to be unloaded and made available for happy new car & truck buyers.
One last very cool detail on the trailer was the big yellow sign proclaiming “Chevrolet - Americas Largest and Finest Low-priced car”.
I can’t help but wonder where these all ended up after they were together on this beautiful day in Sunny Southern California.
I certainly hope that at least one of these classics may have survived to be lovingly cared for today in the collection of someone who truly appreciates vintage cars and trucks.
