Heading Back to Butler

Late in the afternoon of December 18th, 2018 eastbound Union Pacific local LPA70 is approaching Rock siding with an impressive set of older EMD power comprised of three UP SD40Ns and a UP GP40M-2.

The lead pair of 40Ns was the westbound power out of Butler and the other two diesels were both picked up at Clyman Junction making for a very out of the ordinary four unit consist for this job heading back east.

This scene actually was almost not possible – LPA70 had originally departed Butler this day with a single HLCX GP38-2, but when that unit developed mechanical problems a short distance out of the yard they had to return where the two SD40Ns were quickly called upon to pinch hit for the ailing HLCX unit.

So by pure fate, the resulting power set on the return trip to Butler ended up being what you see here with the UP 1957, 1843, 1999 & 1478 all gracing the Adams Line rails in the late day Sun. ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©
