What looks like a Union Pacific freight rolling west through Wisconsin farm country the morning of February 12th, 2015 with over 14,000 horsepower worth of motive power is in reality a westbound train that is limping back east with just the 2000 horsepower of lead GP38-2 shoving their own train down into the siding at Rock.
This is symbol PRVPX, a 10,000ft 173 car monster that from what I could gather off of radio transmissions was having problems with one of the trailing SD9043MACs down at Butler, so the HLCX GP38-2 was added to the head end and the train sent on its way.
But by the time they departed Rock the other two 9043s started acting up and the train stalled on the grade a few miles west of here at Lebanon.
By then a westbound Z-train had caught up with this ailing freight and was holding the main at Rock, so their crew was able to protect the back-up move to help get PRVPX into the siding and out of the way off the mainline.
Eventually during mid-afternoon some additional power was dispatched out from Butler to be tied on and finally get this manifest freight moving again. ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©
