Rose with water droplets

Damn, it's difficult to get a decent photo of intense pure red and retain all the delicate detail. Somehow the red "burns out" and you really have to tweak the histogram curve to get all the detail out while maintaining the overall brightness. Details only come out if you reduce the global exposure severely and add contrast by adjusting the curve locally.

 

I wonder if it is because when you're shooting pure red (or green or blue), you only have one (8 bit / 16 bit) channel at your disposal whereas with less pure colors you have two additional channels.
