Although most people tend to think that Richard and Elizabeth first met on the set of Cleopatra in 1963, that isn't the true story. Richard wrote in his diary nine years earlier, “A girl sitting on the other side of the pool lowered her book, took off her sunglasses and looked at me...She was lavish. She was a dark, unyielding largesse. She was, in sort, too bloody much, and not only that she was ignoring me.”
Years later, the two would meet again. They began their love affair on the set of Cleopatra and their lives were forever intertwined. Burton and Taylor were married between 1964 and 1974 and then again in 1975 for another year. Although married twice and divorced twice the two were the loves of each other's lives.
Just days before Richard's unexpected death in 1984 at the age of 58 he had written Elizabeth a letter. In it, she says, "In it he told [me] what he wanted. Home was where Elizabeth was, and he wanted to come home." She never moved the letter from her bedside and after she passed away, at the age of 79, Elizabeth demanded to be buried with the letter from her true love.
