grundtvigskirken

the grundtvig memorial church by pv jensen klint, completed 1940 Copenhagen

situated on a hill overlooking the outskirts of Copenhagen the monumental church is surrounded by a low rise housing complex, the layout designed by pv jensen klint who was also responsible for a major part of the architecture

the area is named "landsbyen på bjerget" - the village on the mountain - and still has an unmistakeable charm although is was soon engulfed by the surrounding city

the church is breathtaking partly due to is setting, partly due to the consequent use of only one material and one format - the standard brick

what the interiors lack in tactility is more than compensated for by the sublime craftmanship and the monumental simplicity offered by a single material

jensen klint didn´t live to see this culmination of his carreer finished and the church was completed by his son kaare klint

jensen klint and his wife are both - utterly discrete - buried within grundtvigskirken
