Weedy Physique

Brush Type 4 47 018 eases out of Preston Street goods depot in Whitehaven with a load of chemical tanks having shunted the weed-choked yard. This branch and depot, half a mile from the main line at Corkickle, have long vanished. [May 24th 1991]

Preston Street goods yard was shunted around lunchtime. The tanks are bulk sodium tripolyphosphate PCA powder wagons, which used to come down the Corkickle (or Monkwray) Brake from the Marchon chemical works. The incline closed in October 1986. After that, transfer was made to road wagons in Preston Street yard. They were then attached to the Workington-Willesden Speedlink service. Shunting involved loaded wagons being propelled into the yard and drawn out owing to lack of run round facilities.
