Loch, Stock and Barrel

Artist Jack Merriott chose Loch Etive to depict the Western Highlands for a British Railways (Scottish Region) publicity poster. This example was one of 26 posters to feature in the 2011 Scottish Highlands Railway Poster Art Exhibition at Glenfinnan station.

Londoner Merriott (1901-68) was a traditional watercolourist, noted for using the medium in a fluid way. Initially, Greenwich-born Merriott worked as a shipping clerk, painting in his free time. Several pieces were exhibited in the Royal Academy. He became a professional artist in 1928. Merriott was vice-president of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. Versatile, he also worked in oils and pastels. In addition to commissions from British Railways, Merriott worked for the General Post Office, Sphere magazine and Blackie, publishers of the Beautiful Britain series of books.
