Thin Skin Thicker

What's left from flames licking vinyl siding, melting like so much candle wax in the sun. It's a sight I've seen a hundred times, twisted and distorted result. Are we supposed to see beauty in damage and destruction? Don't ask me, but I do. There's nothing doing, no words to make it right. No way to solve the aching aftermath, that arthritic arithmetic of paying back a painful loss. You might describe life as solving a series of problems, until you reach the eventual final one. They're all presented in a measure as if to test a stimulus, and we only fail the test by not surviving it. If you weren't brought down than you must be up for more – like an old oak losing a branch it thinks it never needed, or a three-legged dog getting along just fine. Kind words to make your thin skin thicker, the bark is worth the bite.
