Al zarapito real le cabe el dudoso honor de haber sido incluido en la Lista Roja de Especies Amenazadas 2008 engrosando la lista de más de 12.000 especies de animales y vegetales que ven peligrar su existencia.
En los últimos quinientos años la actividad humana ha causado la extinción de 816 especies. Sólo desde el siglo XVIII han desaparecido 103 especies, una cifra cincuenta veces superior a su ritmo natural de extinción. Según la Unión Mundial para la Naturaleza (UICN), uno de cada diez pájaros y el 25% de los mamíferos figuran en la Lista Roja de especies amenazadas de desaparición, mientras que dos tercios de otras especies también constan bajo el epígrafe de "en peligro". La extinción de animales se ha acelerado en los últimos 200 años como consecuencia directa o indirecta del crecimiento de la población humana, el despilfarro de los recursos naturales y los cambios asociados al medio ambiente. Se trata, desafortunadamente, de un fenómeno más grave de lo previsto años atrás por los conservacionistas.

The extinction of animals has accelerated in the last 200 years like direct consequence or insinuation of the human population's growth, the waste of the natural resources and the changes associated to the environment. It is, unfortunately, of a more serious phenomenon of that foreseen behind years by the conservationist ones.
