Increasing Production and Nutrition in Bangladesh

Baby Shikari is a rural rice farmer in Bangladesh.

She and her husband, Taroni, used to practice traditional methods of cultivation but got very small yields. They learned from a nearby training provided by USAID on how to produce more rice with quality seeds, planting in a line, and Guti fertilizer.

Baby and Taroni have since doubled their rice production and learned that they can use the same techniques on their vegetables, which has increased their vegetable production as well. Their family eats more nutritious food, shares some with their relatives, and sells the rest at the local market. With the additional income, Baby and Taroni have started to raise ducks and chickens too. The eggs contribute to a more diverse, balanced diet for their whole family.

In Bangladesh, through efforts like Feed the Future, USAID has helped nearly 2 million farmers increase their production and income to improve their families’ livelihoods.
