The running gear of an old coal cable bucket, the industrial landscape of Longyearbyen Svalbard
Svalbard is a land of coal mining with mines dotted all over the Island archipelago. The closest to the capital is mine 2B (later named Julenissegruva or the Santa Claus Mine) up at Nybyen along the Longyearbyen Valley. A system of cable suspended coal buckets brought the mineral to the docks were it could be loaded into waiting ships at the coal wharf at pier.
