Milford Sound is the only fiord in New Zealand accessible by land owing to two glacial valleys that form natural corridors for a single road through the Southern Alps. Rainfall in the fiord averages 7-12 metres per year: that's 7,000-12,000 litres of water falling on every square metre of surface.
