MATCHSTICK Issue #3

I can't believe Beam stole my good deed. I thought he was a stand-up guy! Real heroes don't blast other heroes in the back to gain more points for themself, and it doesn't look like anybody was around to see him hit me. I need to find a way to expose this phony...

 

-Back at Fant's apartment-

 

I figure a good person to call for advice would be Wavelength, so I do just that.

 

"Scott, I need your help with something important."

 

WL: "What is it?"

 

"You know Captain Beam?"

 

WL: "Who doesn't know Captain Beam? He's one of the top heroes! He's saved countless lives, stopped major crimes, and made a big mark on the leaderboard!"

 

"He's a phony."

 

WL: "I know, isn't he gre--wait, what? Could you please repeat that?"

 

"He is a complete fraud. I was trying to save a woman from a burning building, and he shot me in the back to save her instead. He's only in it for the fame! What kind of sick, twisted mind betrays another hero just to get points on a stupid board?!"

 

WL: "Apparently, him..."

 

"Well what are we gonna do? I, for one, don't want someone who Caesar's people to be able to compete with everyone."

 

WL: "I agree. But I'm really bad at coming up with ideas...I think you might have called the wrong person."

 

"That gives me an idea! Scott, you genius!"

 

WL: "How could that possibly have helped you come up with an idea?!"

 

"It didn't, I actually wasn't paying attention to a word you just said. We should call other heroes from the leaderboard and ask them if Beam has done the same thing to them!"

 

WL: "I would've thought we could do something that ends in a super cool fight sequence with me, you, and Beam, but that works, too. Nice thinking!"

 

All of a sudden, I hear crashes and people screaming outside.

 

"What the..."

 

I run over to my bedroom window, only to see Aqua outside, slashing his water whips at cars in the road.

 

"Scott, you're gonna wanna come be a part of this. And hurry, I can only stall him for so long."

 

WL: "Stall who? What's going on???"

 

"It's Aqua, again."

 

WL: "Say no more, I'm on my way."

 

Once I suit up, I go downstairs and out the backdoor, to avoid anyone seeing that this is where I live. Just because I don't wear a mask doesn't mean I go around giving out personal information!

 

When I get outside, I fly over the apartment and into the middle of the road, which is now scattered with cars and barren of people, who have taken cover in nearby buildings, alleys, and wherever else they could find. I land a safe distance away from Aqua to be able to speak to him and hopefully stall until Wavelength arrives.
