The Abyss

Thirty years ago, in 1989, was released "The Abyss" movie by James Cameron. I was thrilled since first time I saw, finding the story amazing, played by an exceptional cast and characterized by amazing special effects and perfect music! After watching movie too many times (I still own VHS), in my mind were impressed concept arts of Ron Cobb, in particular the mini submarines realized by production as real models (in scale and 1:1) for underwater shooting.

So I decided to rebuild Flatbed and Cab1 submarines in Lego to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of movie's release.

Technically submarines are slightly oversized to make the best use of some sloped and round bricks and colors are not 100% like original (due to the lack of Lego palette) but models still recognizable!

I added some details that surely enthusiasts will enjoy like radio inside the cockpit of Flatbed which Lieutenant Hiram Coffey will break with a elbow nudge during submarine duel, canopy with adhesive strips to recreate original frame and the DPV (diver propulsion vehicle) on frontside of Cab1 used for rotation in water.

The minifigures of Dr. Lindsey Brigman behind the spherical porthole of Cab1 and of Navy Seal team commander Lieutenant Hiram Coffey at the control of Flatbed, could not miss in cockpits of submarines.

I present both submarines in sailing trim, suspended on deep seafloor, dark and rocky, almost wasteland, as featured in the movie.

With these two mocs I want to celebrate the anniversary of this brilliant and strangely underrated (compared to others) masterpiece of sci-fi genre directed by James Cameron.

I hope the AFOL community likes it and that brings to discover (if ever seen before) this movie!
