The Fujinon XF 18mm f/2 R (Fujifilm) review

Fuji X-E1, The Fujinon XF 18mm f/2 R (Fujifilm)

I've been using the X-E1 as my main camera for over a year now. The Fujinon XF 18mm f/2 R is my favorite lens which is a real surprise as I thought a 28mm would be too wide for walk around.

I was going to sell the lens when I got the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 18-55mm F2.8-4 R LM OIS but as impressive as that lens is it's too size is of putting for me on a mirroless body.

In the situations where I need zoom I'd prefer my Sony a99/a900 with the Sigma AF 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM (DX).

I assumed the 35mm lens would be my favorite as I've always been a low light shooter but it hunts a lot in low light. I'm happy shooting this wide open and the Fujifilm X-E1 has great high Iso capability. If I'm after Bokeh the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM with FF knocks this out of the park.

My Fujinon XF 60mm f/2.4 R macro has broken (note metal construction may not equal build quality (I'm also a klutz) but it' not ideal anyway. For Macro work I'd prefer my Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro Lens via an adapter on this body due to the magnification 1:1 vs 2:2 and manual focus is preferred for that sort of thing. Now I've got an a99 that would be my preferred option for macro stuff. I'd have chosen the X-E1 as a body over the my a900 for macro as it has live view but the a99 has an articulated screen and high iso capabilities. The 60mm never worked for me for portrait either, this is probably due to the lack of off camera TTL functionality that I've become used too.

So against all expectations my 18mm is my favourite Fujinon lens as it's compact with fast auto focus and aperture and a surprisingly useful focus length.

This is for my needs, I think the standard zoom with OIS is a stunning lens and maybe the best of the bunch technically but it's not ideal for my usage.

What's your favorite lens?
