Just a quick test shot at minimum focus distance with the Fujifilm 60mm f/2.4 XF Macro Lens. As a point of reference the head is about 1 inch tall. The effective angle of view is equates to a 90mm macro lens on full frame at 1:1. Not sure if this is truly considered a macro lens as the ratio is 1:2 but the sensor is half the size of a full frame sensor. I shot wide open at f/2.4 and I'd normally stop something like this down to at least f/8 but liked this.
I'm not sure what I think about this lens, it's much better after updating the lens and body firmware, auto focus was much worse before I made the change. I think that's somewhat of a mute point for macro work as you get better results from manual focus. For this shot I set to manual focus, moved the focus point to where i wanted the head and pressed the rear thumb wheel for magnification, I then move the camera back and forth until the acuity is optimal and then press then release the shutter.
I say I'm unsure as there are perhaps cheaper alternatives if you want to use this as a macro lens, especially if you have a traditional DSLR from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax etc. For example Tamron's 90mm f/2.8 macro 1:1 is very sharp but half the price and will get you half the distance closer at minimum focus distance. The narrower angle will give you a shallower depth of field (if desired) despite the marginally smaller maximum aperture at any focal distance. You'd need an adapter and forgo auto exposure and auto focus but the later is less important as you'd be better of manually focusing when the subject is this close to the camera.
The XF lens roadmap has a 56mm f/1.4 scheduled for early 2013 and if you can wait I think that would be a much better medium telephoto lens if it's up to the standard of the current lenses. I think the sensible option would be to wait for that, perhaps buy the Fujifilm launches XF18-55mm F2.8-4.0 OIS if you wanted a longer focal range with native lenses and let this one go...
Having said that, I'm not that sensible and don't regret this. It has a beautiful metal hood, nice focus ring and is as sharp as anything I've used.
Post Processing details:
Light Room: strong contrast curve applied
Nik Software:
Pre Sharpener
Pro Contrast (Color Efex)
Dfine (auto)
Light Room: Feathered vignette applied
I can upload the file out of camera (albeit by a RAW conversion on lightroom) if anyone is interested.
Let me know if this is useful, I've just been posting shots without much detail but there seems to be lots of interest and I'd love to answer any questions about the lenses I have 18mm, 35mm & 60mm, Flashes EF-X20 & EF42, or about the X-E1 if people are interested.
