Common names : Sp: tomate de árbol, palo de tomate (Honduras), tomate granadillo, pix, caxlan pix (Guatemala), tomate dulce (Ecuador), tomate francés (Venezuela), sachatomate, yuncatomate (Perú), limatomate, tomate de monte, tomate de La Paz (Bolivia, Argentina); Po: tomate francés; En: tamarillo, tree tomato, yellow tree tomato; Fr: tomate d'arbre, tamarille.

 

Origin and geographical distribution : Andes of Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina, cultivated from Chile to Venezuela, 1500 - 3000 m. Introduced in some tropical highlands (Caribbean, Central America, Southern India, Ceylan, Southeast Asia) and subtropical areas (e.g. New Zealand and Italy).

 

Status : Cultivated, moderns cultivars. National markets (Colombia, Ecuador). Known only in the cultivated stake.

 

Description : Small half-woody tree to 4m. Propagation by seeds or cuttings. Fruit conical to ellipsoid, 4-6 cm long, 3-5 cm wide, yellow, red, or purple; pulp yellow, orange, or red.

 

Uses : Juice, pulp eaten fresh, baked or used for syrup, dry fruit; jams and sauces.
