Every school in eastern Ukraine is now displays these warning signs. While the signboard on the left explains the dangers posed by unexploded munitions and mines, the panel on the right explains where to seek shelter in a building in case of shelling.
Landmines and unexploded ordinances (UXOs) were the lead cause of child casualties in 2017, accounting for about two-thirds of all recorded deaths and injuries that left many children with lifelong disabilities. For the past 12 months, the EU has funded mine clearing near civilian areas by the Danish Refugee Council that also provides mine-awareness sessions for schoolchildren.
