The challenges of tackling severe food insecurity in remote Papua New Guinea

In order to rapidly get a clear picture of the situation in the remotest areas of Papua New Guinea, WFP conducted emergency assessments by mobile phone, and found that 1.47 million people are food insecure, close to 200 000 of whom were in need of emergency assistance. In April, WFP launched an emergency operation to provide fortified rice for 207 000 of the most severely food insecure people, thanks in part to funding from the European Commission.
