Iraq: Tackling multi-layered humanitarian crisis

Shelter woes

Many Syrian refugees choose to stay outside the camps, to try to find daily labouring work.

Mohammed Ali, 45, from Aleppo, pays €119( $150) in rent for a house in Mamzawa neighbourhood in the Kurdish capital, Erbil, which has a leaky roof and broken windows. He'll receive some cash vouchers from an ECHO partner, the Norwegian Refugee Council, to do basic improvements to his house and to buy other items that families can take with them if they move.

But Mohammed says he can't afford to remain in his house for much longer as the landlord wants to raise the rent. He’s planning to move to an unfinished building where the family can stay for free.
