Queen’s Road, Hong Kong, 1861-64.

Ceded to the British by the Viceroy at Canton (January, 1841), Hong Kong quickly became the favored base for smuggling illicit Indian opium into China. In the 1840s it took six months for a letter to reach Europe, and a year to complete a simple commercial transaction with London. But by the late 1850s, Hong Kong boasted almost two miles of roads, and it had become the staging area for the European Opening of China by force of arms.
