A Canton Lady, 1861-64.

 

Miller’s specialty was the Chinese sitter whom he photographed with great understanding. In this studio portrait he used to advantage the standard photographic conventions of the China Coast — the full-face portrait, the costumed figure and the ubiquitous vase and flower.
